Surrounded by China, Tibet and Nepal, Sikkim was once a kingdom governed by Tibetan royals. In the fifteenth century, the rise of Tibetan Buddhist Geruks in Central Tibet led to the Nimma priests relocating to Sikkim and Bhutan, fleeing the conflicts of the different groups. Pungtsok Namgyal became the first Chogal (pope) in 1642 and started the Kingdom of Sikkim. However, since the 18th century, the territory was gradually invaded by Nepal and Bhutan. In the 19th century, the British colonized India and became a British Protectorate. After the independence of India in 1947, control of the Kingdom of Sikkim was transferred to India.
