3 Inch Dick But the most romanticised version of his life as a dashing, heroic, man of action, who rode his horse Black Bess from London to York in 24 hours, is owed entirely to the fertile imagination of William Harrison Ainsworth, whose novel Rookwood published in 1834, had Turpin as the main character. Turpin never made that ride but another highwayman did. John, Swift Nicks, Nevison robbed a sailor early one morning in 1676 near Gads Hill, Kent and in need of an alibi, rode 190 miles to York in fifteen hours. As to Black Bess, as far as can be ascertained Dick Turpin never owned, nor rode a horse of that name. If Turpin wasn't the handsome, dashing highwayman as portrayed, what did he look like and what was he? Well for starters he was described in The Gentleman's Magazine of June 1737 as being "about 5 feet 9 inches high, brown complexion.
