I’ve used a spectrophotometer a bunch of times in our biotech class, and honestly, it’s a game-changer. It saves so much time, especially when you’ve got several samples to run. The cool thing is it doesn't just tell you how much DNA you've got, but also if it's clean or contaminated. If you ever do this more seriously, it’s worth looking into something like the ones listed here — I got familiar with them through this https://gentaur.co.uk/laboratory-equipment/ while researching affordable options for our student lab.

We had one of those sitting in the back corner of the lab for ages and I always thought it looked way too complex to mess with. Then someone finally demoed it during our lab session and it turned out to be way easier than I expected. Wild how some gear seems intimidating till you actually use it.

Hey folks, I’m working on a small project involving plant DNA extraction, just for fun (and practice). I’ve been using the old-school gel method to get a rough idea of DNA quality, but I keep hearing about spectrophotometers being way more accurate. I don’t have one at home, obviously, but I might be able to borrow one from my uni lab. Has anyone used one for this kind of stuff? Does it really make a big difference in how you quantify your samples?
