Inspired by a Greenwich Village restaurant, Nighthawks, an oil-on-canvas painting by edward hopper nighthawks , is Hopper's most celebrated and best-known work of American art. Completed in January 1942, the painting shows a waiter and three other patrons seated late at night in a restaurant on a deserted New York street corner. Because Hopper was born and lived in New York City, he chose this Greenwich Village restaurant as his subject.
