Using a Space Tug Rocket to Demonstrate Control of Reusable Material

A huge part of what makes space exploration fun is the excitement of seeing new technologies get off the ground. That also applies to a launch of a space tug. This particular vehicle has been in development for over 10 years and it will be launching on top of an unmanned reusable space probe called Dragon. The objective is to demonstrate the newest technology in a very controlled situation. It is scheduled to make its first attempt to land at sea or a restricted area on the Pacific Ocean on November 14th, 2021.

A space tug can do many different things to help us explore space. One of its functions is to hold down the modular space station assembly. Once this is full size, it will then be attached to the space ship and allow it to float freely in space. When it is not being used, the tug will retract and the structure will become stationary. This is a lot of technology that needs to work in unison in order to get our international space program moving in the right direction.

For this upcoming launch the space tug is actually attached to the rocket and not the reusable module. Once the system is operational it will maneuver the rocket into a specific area. Once the rocket has reached its specific destination, the tug will be commanded to move the rocket back into its intended trajectory. Many times this is done with the use of a connection system between the rocket and the tug.

There are many benefits to using this technology. One is the ability to reuse systems. The design of the tug includes some innovative technology that allows it to recover most of its cargo during a single mission. This alone will save quite a bit of money during a five-year space mission. Not only will the space agency be saving money but it will be saving valuable assets to use later.

When connecting with the rocket the tug will be connecting the two together very quickly. As a result, many of these parts will have to be manufactured on a regular basis. If the space tug uses one of these hook parts it could possibly be worth billions of dollars in cost saving the space program.

Overall the future of space travel is exciting. It will no doubt be a major breakthrough when we have vehicles that can travel to space and go beyond. This is only one of the many new technologies that are being developed in the space program. Many more innovations are on the way before long. In fact, there is a good chance we will see many more space tug launches leading to a more automated and comprehensive space program.
