The excuse that use help at least to strengthen weak areas machines is not valid. Perhaps the area is weak because the corresponding muscle does not trip, because (again) a bad movement patterns. For this reason many people have weak glutes or have trouble working the pectorals, even doing exercises that should activate those muscles.

Many monitors gym, motion detect deficiencies in their customers when they make such a deep squat, instead of trying to correct that pattern (which takes time) simply recommend supporting the heels on an elevated surface, doing only half squat, or worse yet, replace the squat machines working isolated parts (leg extension, leg curl or press). This strengthens the core muscles of the leg, but in isolation, not involving the small stabilizing muscles. Again, risk of injury to real movements.
