María Siebald and Itziar Barrio: sign language and robotics issues

Habana, QLD

Naves Matadero (Madrid) presents Trasunto # 2, an adaptation by Siebald of poems to LSE, where each one is interpreted by a deaf and / or hard of hearing interpreter, who performs an individual choreographic piece (from April 4 to 21), and Robota MML, a stage piece where Barrio addresses mechanisms of labor production and the deconstruction of the cinematographic apparatus (April 12, 13 and 14)

In Trasunto # 2, the Chilean creator María Siebald adapts six unpublished poems by contemporary Spanish poets and a deaf poet, adapted to a body choreography and syntax typical of Spanish Sign Language (LSE). The poems are narrated in off in the voices of the poets, to be later performed by the interpreters accompanied by sounds for the listeners and vibrational frequencies for the deaf community.

In addition, the installation 30 ADH is presented , an adaptation in LSE of Human Rights, 30 micro body parts performed by deaf dancers and actors. This video installation is free to access. These pieces are intended to promote the initiative of bringing the deaf community closer to literary culture, motivate dialogue between the deaf and hearing communities and create a link between Spain and Chile.

María Siebald, actress and director of the performance group Nerven & Zellen, became world famous with a video clip of the Scissor Sister version of Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. This Chilean artist has been investigating sign language since 2009 and incorporates it into stage language, creating projects designed for the deaf community. Its objective is to bring deaf people closer to musical culture, performing arts and poetry, opening spaces for dialogue between deaf and hearing people. "Each listener carries a soundtrack in their memory," Siebald explains. "We want to facilitate deaf people to build a visual memory, identify with the messages of the authors and that they can access a piece designed for them," he continues. Training

His projects include the digital platforms NZcanal and NZcanal for children , for which he makes and publishes music video clips adapted to sign language and performs great music hits (such as Scissor Sister, Amy Winehouse and Luz Casal, among others).

Itziar Barrio: Robota MML (April 12, 13 and 14)

The multimedia artist Itziar Barrio, who has lived and worked in New York for a decade, during a residency in Naves Matadero will create Robota MML, a stage piece that addresses issues of robotics, mechanisms of labor production and the deconstruction of the cinematographic apparatus. A project in which he will work with a filming team and different collaborators such as the doctor in robotics Javier F. Gorostiza, the screenwriter Sonia Marí and María Jerez in the acting and stage direction. Robota MML consists of the filming of a film, a remix of other tapes and cultural references that fosters an encounter.

The first time that appeared the term "robot" was in play science fiction RUR (Rossum's Universal Robots) written by Karel Capek in 1920 and premiered in New York in 1922. The word "robot" was devised by the brother of the author from the Czech word "robota", which means "work". RUR is developed in a factory where they build robots to free humans from work. And in ROBOTA MML, Itziar Barrio resituates the characters of this work in a context sensitized with class consciousness and biopower.

Another reference to ROBOTA MML is the work The Raft of the Medusa , painted by Théodore Géricault in 1819 and which inspired Luis Buñuel when writing The Exterminating Angel . Géricault portrays in his painting the survivors of a raft adrift in the middle of the sea. While senior officials were concerned with saving themselves first, they suffered from dehydration and resorted to cannibalism to survive.

"All these references are in contemporary gestures like bodybuilding ( bodybuilding ) or the use of burning objects in music videos Recent" explains Itziar Barrio. “ ROBOTA MML interrelatedly addresses issues of robotics, mechanisms of labor production and the deconstruction of the cinematographic apparatus. Through bodies, technology and smoke, a story will be built over two weeks in Nave 11, articulated through the process of execution, collaboration and meeting with the agents involved ”, summarizes the artist.

During the last days, the process will open to the public, forming the stage piece ROBOTA MML .

Itziar Barrio's exhibitions go beyond the label of any discipline and cross performance, cinema, photography, installation and plastic arts. He has presented his work in international venues such as PARTICIPANT INC (New York), MACBA (Barcelona), Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, Museum of the Banco de la República (Bogotá), Abrons Arts Center (New York) or the Havana Biennial , among others. In 2018, he held his first major retrospective at Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao) under the title BY BY MEANS, curated by Johanna Burton.
