Pure Maine Chaga

Pure Maine Chaga is interesting. The fungus, which grows very slowly, is geographically restricted to colder habitats, making Maine one of those habitats. It has been estimated that it can be found in one of every 15,000 trees. With its growing popularity, there is concern over overexploitation, so attempts have been made to grow the fungus with various successes.

 

One of the compounds found in birch trees is betulin or betulinic acid (compounds that are used as anti-HIV agents) is not digestible by humans, but the fungus makes it a usable form that we can ingest. The cultivated form of Chaga does not have those compounds.
