The Alcohol. Think Again education program is part of a comprehensive strategy in Western Australia that aims to reduce the levels of alcohol-related harm and health issues in Western Australia. The program is comprised of three public education streams that uses a mass reach social marketing strategy to reinforce the Australian Alcohol Guidelines from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Those streams are Alcohol and Health, Alcohol, Parents and Young People and Alcohol and Pregnancy. Alcohol. Think Again is managed by the Prevention Service Division, Mental Health Commission.

Alcohol consumption can have long-term impacts on a person’s health and is linked to an increased risk of chronic disease and early death.Nearly 1 in 15 Western Australian’s aged 14 years or older drink every day, and almost 1 in 5 drink at levels that place them at risk of alcohol-related harm in their lifetime.

The relationship between alcohol and mental health is complex. Some people may drink alcohol to relax or help cope with daily stresses; however, alcohol is a depressant drug that can cause anxiety and increase stress. Alcohol can negatively affect thoughts, feelings and actions, and contribute to the development of, or worsen, existing mental health issues over time.

Even small amounts of alcohol can harm an unborn baby's development, which can have lifelong impacts. There is no known safe time or amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy.
