Epsom salt has been a popular natural remedy for centuries, used to help treat everything from wounds to relieve constipation, but did you know that Epsom salt is really just magnesium sulfate?

Epsom salt is just one of many ways we use magnesium, It is also known as nature's relaxation mineral  to improve our health.

1.The history of Epsom Salt

Epsom salts have a fascinating history, as they were discovered as early as the 18th century in a town called Epsom, about 15 miles from London. People will travel from all over Europe to bathe in the town's brackish spring healing water, which will help with everything from skin problems to wound healing, reducing infections to digestive problems.

Eventually they found that the boiling produced magnesium sulfate, later named Epsom salt, which could then be shipped and sold anywhere. Epsom salt has stood the test of time and remains a popular remedy accepted by both Eastern and Western medical scientists.

2.The benefits of Epsom Salt

Magnesium is an important mineral that acts as a cofactor in more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body that control protein synthesis, muscle contraction, blood pressure regulation and blood sugar balance. Unfortunately, it is suspected that most of the population does not have enough magnesium in their diets, in part because our soils have been changing over the years.

That means a sharp drop in the mineral and processed foods can also drop their magnesium content, leaving them almost devoid of the mineral. Magnesium rich foods include green leafy vegetables, fatty fish such as salmon, nuts and seeds.

Since Epsom salt is technically a form of magnesium therapy, the benefits of bathing in magnesium-rich bath lotion are thought to be similar to those of oral magnesium. Many people are deficient in magnesium and can be treated by using Epsom salt immersion instead of supplements. One of the first benefits of Epsom salt discovered was its ability to act as an all-natural laxative.

Today, however, the internal use of Epsom salt as a laxative is not recommended. Instead, there are other forms of magnesium that can help keep things moving more gently along the digestive tract, magnesium citrate, which can be taken in capsules or powdered drinks, is one of the forms of magnesium recommended by doctors for constipation, and magnesium oxide.
