Water evaporation can me mitigated to some extend by careful choice of dam size, depth and location. Dams that are shaded evaporate less water, as do deeper dams. The shallower a dam is, the faster it will lose water. In sites where seepage is an ongoing problem, and the dam cannot be located to a much more suitable location, a dam liner or some other barrier is then the only option to stop seepage. Dam liners, although expensive are really one of the few ways to ensure no water can seep out. Dam liners can be buried to increase the lifespan of the liner and help protect them. This is often how pond liners are installed.
